For years, our team has been dedicated to researching, developing, and producing phytoplankton-based products designed to support everyday nutrition and wellness. We combine marine science, controlled cultivation, rigorous quality standards, and a deep respect for nature to create products you can confidently incorporate into your daily routine.
Our Story
Our story began with a remarkable discovery.
In 2005, our founder, David Hunter, was working at a shellfish farm when he witnessed a seriously ill coworker experience an unexpected recovery after consuming phytoplankton. This experience sparked a lasting interest in the nutritional potential of marine microalgae and inspired David to explore how phytoplankton could be cultivated safely and sustainably for human consumption.
Over the following years, David worked alongside algae farmers, researchers, and scientists to understand the possibilities of phytoplankton and develop reliable cultivation methods. This extensive research and planning ultimately led to the development of pharmaceutical-grade cultivation facilities in Cádiz, Spain.
The journey continued with the introduction of Karen Phytoplankton, named in memory of David’s mother. The product quickly gained recognition in Canada and became available through pharmacies, major retailers, and Costco, reaching hundreds of thousands of customers.
Today, Global Phytoplankton Alliance builds on that foundation with an international vision: helping more people discover phytoplankton as a natural source of nutrition while continuing to advance sustainable cultivation and product quality.
What Is Phytoplankton?
Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the foundation of the ocean’s food chain. Despite their tiny size, these organisms contain a diverse range of naturally occurring nutrients, including essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, chlorophylls, and antioxidants.
At Global Phytoplankton Alliance, we focus on carefully selected marine microalgae and develop products that preserve their nutritional value in convenient forms for everyday use.

Our phytoplankton portfolio is built around different nutritional and wellness applications.
Our Microchloropsis Gaditana phytoplankton is a nutrient-dense marine microalga naturally containing EPA omega-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids, chlorophylls, carotenoids, vitamins, and trace minerals.
We also offer TetraSOD®, a standardized marine microalgae ingredient derived from Tetraselmis chuii, as well as phytoplankton-based skin extracts and formulas developed for pets.
